Drawing – Turning Over Stones (2002)

I began this series of drawings as an antidote to the long processes involved in making a painting. Each image is A1 in size and was done in one sitting, taking 30 minutes to several hours.

The results were spontaneous and retained a primacy that was sometimes lost through the workings of a painting. This shows in the symbolism – an almost archeological dig of the psyche. I used charcoal pastels, and the physicality of this medium ideally suited the drawings.
