‘Avalon’ Pt.1
I have always painted and made images, but due to circumstances, very little exists from before 1996. I found myself in a situation where I had the space and time to paint. These are some of the early works I produced there, and which still exist.
I had just moved to Glastonbury, UK, somewhere I had always wanted to live, and the influence can be seen in the imagery. There is an attempt to make the individual become epic. (Sometimes it is the place or surroundings which has an epic effect on the individual). In these pictures there is very little separation between individual / sentient being and place.
There is a significant influence of Arthurian / Merlin / Grail stories, symbolism and magic in these works. I was also interested in religious imagery and meaning from west / east, celtic / zen, ethical wisdom-paths. Ironically, I was aesthetically influenced by Russian & Greek Christian Icons and altar pieces.
These ideas were to continue into ‘Avalon’ Pt.2 (1998 – 2001). Then, practical shamanism became a more significant influence.
