Paintings 1998 – 2001

‘Avalon’ Pt.2

I was living in Glastonbury, UK at the time I made these paintings. At this point the influence of practical shamanism shaped the imagery. There is also a technical development from the earlier pictures (‘Avalon’ Pt.1 1996 – 1997). I consider some of these pictures to be the high-point of my creative time there, and these pictures reflect my interests and concerns.

Glastonbury is a place where the ‘alternative’ community gathers and often attempts to work things out together, on a spiritual, political, environmental and conspiracy-theory (conspiracy-fact) level. An expanded awareness, an idealism and vision, and the politics of the personal.

These works reflect my interests then:
Practical shamanism through vision quest & good action; paganism; wicca; zen buddhism & taoism; ley-lines & earth mysteries; constructive anarchism; UFOs; ETC;

Throughout, I attempted to work with sound aesthetic principles based on art history and theory (dada, surrealism, expressionism, cubism, abstraction…) and also to interpret ‘psychedelic’ art in a painterly, communicative way. The few later works here show a slight change of motive.
